Aquarium Freshwater Fish for Beginners

Most beginners and experienced fish hobbyists realize that caring for fish and their aquarium can be most enjoyable. However, with the apparent infinite varieties of aquarium freshwater fish, a beginner will experience some difficult choices. They might be overwhelmed with what kind of fish or fish community to begin with. Or, how many should they acquire?

An ideal way of choosing fish is to opt for species already proven to be suitable for the beginner hobbyist. These fish species are typically small in size, hardy, not picky eaters, don’t generate much waste, have pleasant character and will endure other fish.

The goal when starting your freshwater aquarium is to provide a suitable environment that your fish are accustomed to in their natural environment. For instance, if you have a schooling fish community, make sure to provide them with sufficient space in order for them to swim about and gather in your aquarium. If your marine pet is secretive or shy, provide him with sufficient cover by providing some hiding spots. Do some research on the environmental requirements of your chosen fish to guarantee their security and happiness.

Now, let’s tackle each of the types of aquarium freshwater fish:

1.    Tetras

Perhaps these are the most familiar fish available for beginners. There are different kinds and all tend to be very affordable. Since they are known as schooling fish, they are great in groups.

2.    Barbs, Danios, Minnows and Rasboras

These fish can be very hardy and come in different design patterns and colors.

3.    Gouramis

They are typically peaceful. They possess an interesting look and come in different colors. A specific type is the kissing gourami which can surely add personality to your aquatic habitat.

4.    Swordtails, Platies and Guppies

They possess unique features and they are all very colorful. They tend to stay small, at least 3 inches or less. All of these species are peaceful and easily prosper in their environment.

5.    Cory Cats, Loaches, Plecostomus and other bottom feeders

Cory cats are appropriately named as they have whiskers like cats. They make use of them to filter the bottom of the tank for food. They are vibrant and look as if they have much energy. Conversely, loaches possess a distinctive look since they have a snout-like mouth. They are great at eliminating the snail population if the unwanted snails are taking over your aquarium. Loaches are normally nocturnal and secretive and are good in pairs.

The Plecostomus are an excellent addition as they feed on excess food and algae. They have suction cup mouths and hard scales. They are very fascinating to observe when feeding. Though there are regular species that are affordable and available at any pet shop, there are also some unusual plecos which are expensive.

One significant factor to keep in mind is the size of your aquarium. The size of your fish tank will determine how many fish you can have. Never overpopulate your tank because if you do, it will also cause over excessive waste in the tank and can kill your fish.
