Fish for Freshwater Tanks: Four Friendly Tips

How prepared are you with the idea of taking care of different varieties of fish for freshwater tanks?  You could be prepared with the idea of raising fish, but are your fish just as prepared to live with each other in your aquarium as their new home?

Before you go out and buy all sorts of fish to go in your tank, here are some tips you may consider to help you:

1. The size of your tank.

Think in terms of gallons and capacity. An ideal home aquarium would be around 10 to 20 gallons in capacity.  It should be small enough to fit into your living space and big enough to house a variety of fish. If you have the space, you can go big and buy a 55 gallon aquarium.

Knowing just how exciting it will be to decorate your aquarium, don’t go overboard and design it in such a way that there is enough space for fish and plants alike amid all the accessories.

2. The size and number of your fish.

The size of fish for freshwater tanks, as well as their number, should be proportional to the size of your tank.  Cute as they are, they won’t stay that small forever.  They’re bound to grow bigger and to consume more space.

Ask yourself if your aquarium can accommodate fish as they mature and grow.  Give them some room for growth.

3. The diet for your fish.

When you choose species of fish, you also have to consider their diet and feeding habits.  You must know how to properly feed them, and you should apply these to the way you feed your fish.

Most fish are easy to feed, and they only require a once-a-day feeding of fish flakes.  You can always buy fish food at your local pet store.  Some species require various or other food types such as blood worms or brine shrimp as part of their menu.

4. Their compatibility with other fish.

There are certain kinds of fish which are compatible with each other like. However, if put aggressive fish in the same tank with community fish, your aquarium is in for a battle and your community fish will lose.

No amount of hiding behind plants and decors can save the poor, helpless creatures from their predators, and you will end up with a lot of dead or injured fish. A key is to know which fish go together well and which fish do not.  Many times you can have a community of aggressive fish that can live great together. An example of this would be raising Cichlids together as long as you have knowledge and right setup.

In summary, if you house your fish in a freshwater tank of the right size, capacity, and location, along with having the appropriate mix or community of fish, you are on your way to having a fun and fulfilling hobby in fish keeping.
