An Overview of Freshwater Aquarium Maintenance

The moment one decides to put up a freshwater aquarium, one must be aware that it entails some maintenance and care. You cannot just set up an aquarium and leave it without regular maintenance. You have to consider the living creatures and how they will be able to survive. Committing to having a freshwater aquarium calls for responsibility and obligation to be able to properly take care of your fish tank.

A couple aspects of maintaining your fish tank include gravel vacuuming and making partial water changes. From time to time, water has to be replaced and changed to assure proper water chemistry. For example, a 25% water change every two weeks is sometimes recommended. This varies with the size of the tank and how many fish you have. While doing this, the gravel is vacuumed to remove trapped debris, uneaten food, and waste from the fish. The purpose of this is to ensure adequate supply of oxygen to the nitrifying bacteria and to eliminate harmful nutrients.

The aquarium glass itself needs timely maintenance. This can be done by cleaning the exterior glass with glass cleaner and paper towels. Make sure not to spray any accidentally inside the tank. The interior glass on the other hand can be cleaned by using an algae scrubber pad to dislodge algae from the aquarium. Glass canopies must also be cleaned regularly to allow maximum access of the light.

Power filters and water pumps are equipment that must be occasionally detached and cleaned. Most importantly, filter media must be replaced every few months to eliminate the particulates which have began to accumulate. This can prevent the occurrence of clogging. You may be able to go several months before having to change filter media, depending on the type of filter system you have.

These are just some of the basic things one has to know in how to do the maintenance of your freshwater aquarium. Keep this in mind to preserve the freshwater aquariums in your own homes.  For more information, feel free to browse my website, sign up for my FREE e-mail course, or get my e-book.
