Freshwater Aquarium Plants:
Things to Ponder
There are various components in freshwater aquariums that provide a natural feeling and a comfortable place to live for aquatic species such as fish. Most of these aquariums have the usual gravel, marble and stone substrate along the bottom of the aquarium. In addition, many have green freshwater plants that are many times artificial.
If you are planning to put some real live plants in your freshwater aquarium, there are basic points you must ponder before you purchase aquatic plants:
Proper Lighting for the Plants
Make sure that there is a sufficient lighting for real or live plants. The light must be 2 watts based on each gallon of water. In this way, you are already promoting good growth for the plants. Think of purchasing a light system that is intended for growing plants in your freshwater aquarium. You must be careful in choosing the light system since strong lighting can cause brisk plant growth, but mostly algae growth which we want to avoid.
Growth Rate
All plants grow at varied rates. Identify those plants which grow slow, average, and fast. Put slow growing plants in front of the aquarium, followed by medium growing plants, then put the largest or the fast growing freshwater plants at the back.
Substrate
Many plants require a particular substrate to assure proper growth. Some can hold on to coarse gravel while others are only apt with fine gravel. Also, there are plants that grow well in sand.
An addition you have to make sure that the plants are rinsed in water and must be inspected for possible snails and insects. Remove any snails or insects as they can take over your freshwater aquarium, unless this is desired.
Choose Plants that are Compatible with Fish
You might find your plants floating after you have just planted them in your aquarium. The possible cause for this is that some plants are fish worst offenders. They like eating the plants that are placed in their fish tank with them. So, in order to have grow freshwater plants successfully, try to know what type of fish you have and whether they like to eat and uproot plants. Ask a fish expert or pet shop staff about this.
