Tips for Maintaining Your Freshwater Aquarium Temperature
When starting a freshwater aquarium, temperature is something that you need to consider and set to the right temperature. People not familiar with aquarium keeping may think that room temperature is good enough, or the light in the cover is enough to keep the water warm. However, the temperature in the tank will have dramatic effects on the health and the type of fish in your aquarium.
Fish are very delicate creatures. Even the slightest fluctuation in water conditions from pH level, to oxygen level, to the temperature can have drastic effects on them. Your goal as someone who is keeping fish is to make sure their environment is as stress free as possible. Much like you have a hard time adjusting to drastic changes in your life and surroundings, fish also struggle with the changes in conditions.
The optimal freshwater aquarium temperature for many tropical fish is between 77 to 83 degrees. With this in mind, and depending on the season, room temperature can fluctuate from 65 to 88 degrees. That change in temperature can be stressful to some fish that may result in death. Keeping an eye on the temperature can help save your fish from stress or a rather sudden death.
There are a few things you can do for your home freshwater aquarium and you should have no problems with water temperature.
1) Locate your aquarium away from a window and preferably next to an interior wall
2) Obtain a water heater that is rated to heat the amount of water your tank holds
3) Make sure you have a thermometer in your tank
4) Maintaining your home at a constant temperature helps maintain your tank temperature
5) Most importantly, make sure you are keeping your aquarium at the right temperature that is optimal for the type of fish you have in your tank
Your freshwater aquarium temperature is an important consideration when keeping fish. If you take the steps above such as using a water heater that is adequate for the size of your tank, you should have no problems.
