Tips for Choosing the Right Freshwater Aquarium
You wouldn’t think that there would be much involved in selecting a freshwater aquarium. After all, it is just a glass, or plastic tank that you fill with water and put in your fish.
Size
Selecting the right aquarium tank size for you is an important consideration to think about. If you only have a small area in your home where a fish tank could go, then you would not want to get a large 50 gallon aquarium. Think about the size and weight that your location can handle. The size of your tank will also determine how many and the size of fish you can accommodate in your aquarium.
There are several sizes to choose from:
1. Small Tank - This is a tank that ranges in size that is less than 10 gallons. These types of tanks can pretty much go anywhere as they will not have a large weight load, and many times will not need any electrical accessories such as light and filter if you are raising hardy fish such as goldfish.
2. Medium Tank - A medium tank is anything between 10 gallons and 45 gallons. These tanks can weigh a lot (figure one gallon of water is 5 pounds) and will require access to an outlet. Make sure the location for this size of tank is convenient for cleaning as they can weight up to 200 pounds when full of water.
3. Large Tank - These tanks are more than 45 gallons and are usually floor models that are purchased with a specialized cabinet that will hold the tremendous weight involved.
Location of Tank
In addition to aquarium size, the location of your tank must also be considered. If you are purchasing anything larger than a small sized tank, you will need to make sure that you can clean it effectively. Give your larger tanks a lot of room and do not put near any other electrical devices. The area around your aquarium has potential to get wet during cleaning or filling or if the filter were to clog. It is also good to place your aquarium in an area where the temperature is stable. A location away from windows next to interior walls in your dwelling may be a good choice.
Shape
Today you can get a tank in many different shapes, but the most popular is the standard rectangular shape or a small round aquarium. The larger tanks that are standard shape are mostly glass construction while the odd shaped, hexagonal tanks can be made of plastic or acrylics.
Also coming into popularity are vertical type freshwater aquarium tanks. These are especially helpful when you do not have a lot of space. They are taller than normal to compensate for not having a lot of width.
Choose your freshwater aquarium tank wisely and you will have a good time taking care of your fish. One of the reasons people struggle with keeping fish is because the tank is not the right size, or in the right location.
