Utilizing Tropical Aquarium Plants

Using aquarium plants in home aquariums, specifically tropical aquarium plants have become very popular in the recent years. Choosing the right aquatic plants for your aquarium can be just as important as choosing your fish. In this article, we will learn more about tropical aquarium plants, their advantages and disadvantages in using them, and some additional insight.

Lush and healthy plants are eye-catching to look at and will create a much more natural environment in the aquarium. Most fish feel safer and less stressed when they have plants to hide among.

Choosing what types of plants will also depend on what types of fish you have in the aquarium.  If your fish utilizes aquatic plants as habitat in the wild, they may feel very insecure in a fish tank without any vegetation. Some fish are rock dwellers and can get the same sense of security from caves and rocks.  For these fish, provide adequate gravel and rocks to your aquarium.

If your fish disturb the plants and damage them by eating the leaves or digging up the roots, caves and wood might be a better solution than plants. If uprooting is the main problem, you can choose plants that float. If your fish are strong plant eaters, artificial plants can be used instead of live plants. It can also be possible to find a few live plant species that your fish may not like to eat if this is a problem in your tank. If your fish only nibble on the plants, you can choose strong, fast growing live plants that can handle it.

Plants will not only provide your fish with cover and make your aquarium look beautiful; they can also help keep the water quality in better condition. Fish and plants coexist in the wild and can work well in the aquarium.
