Add Tropical Aquarium Plants for That Natural Look

If you want to create an ecosystem that is fish-friendly, you might add tropical aquarium plants which remind tropical fish of their natural habitat to your fish tank.  Like a home away from home, you will provide fish, their companions, and other aquarium inhabitants with great habitat for feeding, hiding, and maybe even breeding.

Artificial plants can be just as decorative as live plants, but the use of live aquarium plants look much more natural. Plants are not only decorative, but they can also be nutritious if you have plant eating fish. This could mean a big mess for you, so make sure your fish do not eat plants, unless you want to be replacing and replanting them all of the time.

Further, benefits of live plants include providing fish oxygen, utilizing excess ammonia and nitrate from your tank, and most of all by providing habitat. They also will be involved in keeping the water naturally balanced.

When adding plants to your aquarium, you should wash the plants gently and carefully before you place them in.  Rinse them off to get rid of minute organisms like worms or small feeders like snails which can do more harm than good. Snails can many times reproduce very rapidly and take over the tank.

For healthy growth for your aquatic plants, you will need adequate light to support a process called photosynthesis.  Find out what the light requirements are for the various plant types at your local aquarium fish retailer.  Some plants do not require much light, while others require more.  Further, you may need to provide full spectrum lighting or a more intense lighting system depending on the plants you want to grow.

For those plants which are meant to be planted, see that they don’t float to the surface.  Anchor them to supporting rocks or tie them to structures until they are strong and healthy enough to attach themselves to the substrate.

Some examples of tropical aquatic plants that you can grow in your aquarium include  Java moss, java fern, and dwarf anubias. These are only some of the more common ones you can look into and try out.  There are many other varieties of plants you can combine with them, depending on the type of fish you care for and the conditions which already exist in your aquarium.

To select the right tropical aquarium plants for your home set-up, you can always check out forums where fish lovers swarm and congregate.  Read and gather ideas from books and magazines, and the internet. Lastly, talk to your local fish retailer, aquarium expert, or fish keeping enthusiast for more great information.
